The Sinking Mermaid

Buying Countrywide at 10 and change may have been the smartest thing I have ever done. Not selling at 12 and a half… well, a little less smart. Riding it down to 5.. ok.. I need a drink.  Doing this all while unemployed? Please don’t bandage my wrists if you find them sliced. Just pour rubbing alcohol on me. I don’t want an infection.

At least, there is some deal where I will receive .1812314154867342034683443489645435 shares of Bank of America for every share of Countrywide. That’s some salvation.. The same salvation that happens when you lose your wallet and find a subway token. Not so much…

The Sinking Mermaid is the title of a book, which I started several years ago, about Starbucks Coffee and my misadventures as Partner 209306. I said “started”, not “finished”, because my hard drive crashed and most of the book was lost.

The title “The Sinking Mermaid” is taken from a comment by a friend who was, at the time, the Starbucks Retail Manager of the Year. She noted that, in the new logo, the siren appeared to be sinking. Her comment stuck with me. “The Sinking Siren” sounds silly and few people know what a siren is, so “The Sinking Mermaid” was the obvious choice. I find irony in the fact that a Starbucks loyalist and true believer in Howard Schultz supplied the title for a blog such as this.
